{"id":332,"date":"2016-01-26T20:03:31","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T04:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sergneri.net\/wordpress\/?p=332"},"modified":"2022-11-28T21:21:48","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T05:21:48","slug":"what-english-workmen-sing-december-1871","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sergneri.net\/wordpress\/index.php\/2016\/01\/26\/what-english-workmen-sing-december-1871\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT ENGLISH WORKMEN SING, December 1871"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHAT ENGLISH WORKMEN SING.<br \/>\n&#8220;The Secularist Manual of Songs and Ceremonies &#8221;<br \/>\nhas recently attracted some notoriety, from the<br \/>\nallusion made to it by Gladstone in a recent speech.<br \/>\nIt is the creed and song-book, so to speak, of the<br \/>\nrevolutionary working classes in England, and<br \/>\na correspondent furnishes some specimens of<br \/>\nthe rhyme it contains, of which the subjoined<br \/>\nare the most unobjectionable :<br \/>\n&#8220;The seed ye sow another reaps,<br \/>\nThe wealth ye find another keeps,<br \/>\nThe robes ye make another wears,<br \/>\nThe arms ye forge another bears!&#8221;<br \/>\nHere are a couple of verses of Earnest James&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8220;Song of the Lower Classes&#8221; :<br \/>\n&#8220;We plow and sow, we&#8217;re so very, very low,<br \/>\nThat we delve in the dirty clay.<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis we bless the plain with the growing grain,<br \/>\nAnd the vale with the fragrant hay.<br \/>\nOur places we know, we&#8217;re so very low,<br \/>\n&#8216; Tis down at the landlord&#8217;s feet;<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re not too low the grain to grow,<br \/>\nBut too low the bread to eat.<br \/>\nDown, down the hill we go, we&#8217;re so very, very low,<br \/>\nTo the hall of the deep-sunk mines;<br \/>\nBut we gather the proudest gems that glow<br \/>\nWhere the crown of a despot shines.<br \/>\nAnd whene&#8217;er he lacks, upon our backs<br \/>\nFresh loads he deigns to lay;<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re far too low to vote the tax,<br \/>\nBut none too low to pay.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnother piece, called &#8221; The People,&#8221; has a lively ring about it:<br \/>\n&#8220;Some folks will sing &#8216; God Bless the King&#8217;<br \/>\nOr Queen at public dinners,<br \/>\nAnd drink the health of doubtful saints,<br \/>\nAnd very certain sinners.<br \/>\nBut we do not toast to-night<br \/>\nThe court or camp or steeple;<br \/>\nWe here a different theme indite \u2014<br \/>\n&#8216;The people, boys! the people.&#8217;<br \/>\nIf history we read aright,<br \/>\nTis plain unto my seeming,<br \/>\nOne half the troubles of this world<br \/>\nArise from rulers&#8217; scheming.<br \/>\nThey plot to work each other ill;<br \/>\nTheir subjects treat like cattle\u2014<br \/>\nYet when they&#8217;re in a mess expect<br \/>\nThat we will fight the battle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento Daily Union 16 December 1871<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHAT ENGLISH WORKMEN SING. &#8220;The Secularist Manual of Songs and Ceremonies &#8221; has recently attracted some notoriety, from the allusion made to it by Gladstone in a recent speech.
