\nFor Wearing Masks and
\nSuggests Precautions.<\/p>\n
\nSpanish influenza epidemic in San Diego yesterday. The
\nIllness of Dr. E. P. Chartres-Martin, who became sick Sunday
\nwhile duck hunting with a party of friends, was a feature
\nof the news concerning the disease yesterday. Dr. Chartres-Martin was
\nsaid yesterday afternoon to be resting easily, and apparently had sustained
\na mild attack.<\/p>\n
\nto force the use of the gauze masks, the health department redoubled
\nits requests yesterday that they be worn, and cautioned those who
\nhad been wearing the masks but who have discarded them for the
\nlast two or three days.<\/p>\n
\nprecaution must be observed if this condition is to continue or
\na relapse to be avoided.<\/p>\n
\nNotices have come to the department concerning bridge, parties, teas and
\nother social gatherings which are being held, although any congregation
\nmay prove the occasion of the dissemination of the influenza germs
\nand the department again asked that the ban he placed against these
\nprivate gatherings as well as against public meetings.<\/p>\n
\nboard requests householders to take care of is centered
\nin milk bottles, which are said to be favorable media
\nof transmission for the germ, and householders are asked
\nto sterilize each bottle in boiling water.<\/p>\n

\nbut health officials believe it will come today. There will be
\nenough to start inoculations, while steps will be taken immediately

\ncommunication received from San Francisco by the
\nlocal Red Cross concerning the wearing of masks
\nto prevent the spread of influenza:
\n“The state board of health suggests that a proper and suitable mask is
\na clean, close-textured handkerchief, folded diagonally once from the corners
\nand placed with the middle of the fold just below the eyes, with the
\nends knotted at the back of the neck: in abort, worn like the highwayman’s
\nmask.
\nThis can be dropped below the chin when not needed and can be easily
\nslipped in place above the nose when the person is near others.
\n“The use of the handkerchiefs will save the gauze needed for surgical

\nToday; Vaccine Supply Expected.<\/h4>\n

\nDiego made much headway in its campaign
\nagainst the Spanish influenza.<\/p>\n

\nofficial report tomorrow may not corroborate
\nthis estimate, it is regarded as accurate.<\/p>\n
\nthe arrival of a supply of vaccine, now enroute
\nfrom San Francisco and expected to reach here
\ntoday or tomorrow.<\/p>\n
\nother phases of the treatment still in an experimental
\nstage, it is expected to prove efficacious in preventing
\nthe spread of the disease.<\/p>\n
\nvaccine by the health board and the people of the
\ncity will be urged to submit themselves to vaccination
\nwithout loss of time.<\/p>\n
\nhypodermic needle and the “shot In the arm”
\ncauses little discomfort.<\/p>\n
\nvaccine among local physicians, the city
\nhealth authorities will, immediately on its
\narrival, start a number of cultures which will
\nyield an unlimited supply of the vaccine within
\na short time. There will be no shortage of the
\npreventive in San Diego.<\/p>\n
\nthe people to wear gauze masks as a preventive
\nagainst contracting the spreading influenza.
\nThe city council will be asked at its meeting
\ntomorrow to enact an ordinance making the use
\nof the masks compulsory. The council refused last
\nweek to make such an order, and it is known
\nthat a majority is against the measure. Both
\nthe health board and the common council have
\nrequested that everyone in San Diego wear the
\nmasks, and many are.<\/p>\n
\ninfectious cases of disease, always have worn
\nthis kind of mask as a precaution against breathing
\nin any of the germs.<\/p>\n

\nFavored by weather conditions that were perfect,
\nthe population of San Diego spent much of its time
\nyesterday in the open air. Thousands went to the
\ncountry, the beaches and the parks and every highway

\nand some ancient vehicles which have rested undisturbed
\nin barns and garages for long years carried loads
\nof people, happy in the pure and bracing air and
