\nM. Nixon. 37-year-old new Repub-
\nlican senator from California, took
\nhis oath of office today.
\nHe was sworn in by Vice Presi-
\ndent Alben W. Barkley after be-
\ning escorted to the senate rostrum
\nby Sen. William F. Knowland, R.
\nCalif.<\/p>\n
Nixon, whose part in the Un-
\nAmerican Activities Committee
\nprobe of the Alger Hiss case high-
\nlighted his two-term service in the
\nhouse, succeeds Sen. Sheridan
\nDowney, D. Calif.
\nDowney did not seek re-election
\nand resigned from the senate a
\nmonth before his term expired.
\nThat permitted Gov. Earl Warren
\nto name Nixon to the seat, giving
\nhim a seniority edge on other new-
\nly-elected senators who will not
\ntake their seats until January.<\/p>\n
Nixon beat Rep. Helen Gahagan
\nDouglas. D., Calif., in the Nov. 7
\nelection.<\/p>\n
Although only 37, Nixon is not
\nthe “baby\u201d of the senate. Sen.
\nRussell Long, D., La. \u2014son of the
\nlate “Kingfish\u201d\u2014entered the sen-
\nate at 30 and is just 32 now. Nixon
\nis next youngest.<\/p>\n
Nixon was quiet and solemn as
\nhe went to the rostrum with
\nKnowland. He wore a dark blue
\ndouble-breasted suit, a white shirt
\nand a figured maroon tie.<\/p>\n
Several friends from California
\nsat in the rear of the small, his-
\ntoric chamber to watch the cere-
\nmony.<\/p>\n
Downey was not present.<\/p>\n
