Work,<br \/>\nin charge of Records and Research of the Tuskegee<br \/>\nInstitute, there were 62 lynchings in 1918. This is<br \/>\n24 more than for the year 1917.<br \/>\nOf those lynched, 58 were negroes and 4 were whites.<br \/>\nFive of those put to death were women.<br \/>\nSixteen, or a little more than one-fourth of those<br \/>\nput to death, were charged with rape or attempted rape.<br \/>\nThe offenses charged against the whites lynched were:murder, 2; being disloyal, 2.<br \/>\nThe offenses charged against the negroes were:<br \/>\nAlleged complicity in murder, 14;<br \/>\nMurder, 7;<br \/>\nCharged with threats to kill, 6;<br \/>\nCharged with rape, 10;<br \/>\nCharged with attempted rape, 6;<br \/>\nAlleged participation in fight about alleged hog stealing, 3;<br \/>\nKilling officer of the law 2;<br \/>\nBeing intimate with woman, 1;<br \/>\nAssisting man charged with murder to escape, 1;<br \/>\nRobbing house and frightening women, 1;<br \/>\nKilling man in dispute about automobile repairs, 1;<br \/>\nMaking unwise remarks. 1;<br \/>\nMaking unruly remarks, 1;<br \/>\nKilling landlord in a dispute over a farm contract, 1;<br \/>\nAssault with intent to murder, 1;<br \/>\nWounding another, 1;<br \/>\nRobbery and resisting arrest, 1.<\/p>\n<p>The states in which lynchings occurred and the<br \/>\nnumber in each state are as follows:<br \/>\nAlabama, 3;<br \/>\nArkansas, 2;<br \/>\nFlorida, 2;<br \/>\nGeorgia, 18;<br \/>\nIllinois, 1;<br \/>\nKentucky, 1;<br \/>\nLouisiana, 9;<br \/>\nMississippi, 6;<br \/>\nNorth Carolina, 2;<br \/>\nOklahoma, 1;<br \/>\nSouth Carolina, 1;<br \/>\nTennessee, 4;<br \/>\nTexas, 9;<br \/>\nVirginia, 1;<br \/>\nWyoming, 1.<\/p>\n<p>Are we civilized?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco Call, 6 January 1919 1918 LYNCHINGS ACCORDING to the records compiled by Monroe N.
