\n1918 LYNCHINGS<\/p>\n
ACCORDING to the records compiled by Monroe N. Work,
\nin charge of Records and Research of the Tuskegee
\nInstitute, there were 62 lynchings in 1918. This is
\n24 more than for the year 1917.
\nOf those lynched, 58 were negroes and 4 were whites.
\nFive of those put to death were women.
\nSixteen, or a little more than one-fourth of those
\nput to death, were charged with rape or attempted rape.
\nThe offenses charged against the whites lynched were:murder, 2; being disloyal, 2.
\nThe offenses charged against the negroes were:
\nAlleged complicity in murder, 14;
\nMurder, 7;
\nCharged with threats to kill, 6;
\nCharged with rape, 10;
\nCharged with attempted rape, 6;
\nAlleged participation in fight about alleged hog stealing, 3;
\nKilling officer of the law 2;
\nBeing intimate with woman, 1;
\nAssisting man charged with murder to escape, 1;
\nRobbing house and frightening women, 1;
\nKilling man in dispute about automobile repairs, 1;
\nMaking unwise remarks. 1;
\nMaking unruly remarks, 1;
\nKilling landlord in a dispute over a farm contract, 1;
\nAssault with intent to murder, 1;
\nWounding another, 1;
\nRobbery and resisting arrest, 1.<\/p>\n
