A Life of Terror. <\/h3>\n

The Ford brothers have been starring
\nthrough the country as murderers, but
\njust at the present they are not happy. <\/p>\n

The acquittal of Frank James, brother
\nof Jesse, whom one of the boys treach-
\nerously shot from behind his back,
\nas well as the existence of a large
\nnumber of sympathizers with the James
\nbrothers, the most of whom handle
\nfire-arms freely and skillfully,
\nare considerations that tend to
\nmake life a burden to the Ford boys. <\/p>\n

They have been in Louisville for some
\ntime, and the Commercial thus refers
\nto their presence there and their departure: <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a stay of a week in Louisville, and
\nit has been a week of terror to them, the
\nFord boys left this city last night by the
\nO. and M. railroad for Toledo, Ohio.
\nThey were in a constant state of fear, and
\nboth of them went heavily armed all the time. <\/p>\n

Both wore belts, in which they carried a
\nbrace of huge Colt’s six-shooters, and
\ntwo extra rounds of cartridges. <\/p>\n

One of the pistols carried by Bob Ford was the
\none with which Jesse James was killed. <\/p>\n

In addition to the pistols, Bob carried a murderous
\nknife, in the use of which he is very dexterous,
\nbeing able to slash an enemy into ribbons before
\na hand could be raised in defense. While here they
\nroomed on Gray street, near Second, and slept with
\ntheir pistols at their sides. <\/p>\n

Bob is actually expecting to be killed at any
\nmoment, and life is anything but a pleasure to
\nhim under the circumstances.” <\/p>\n

It is a rude state of society that nourishes
\nand encourages such characters. It is true
\nthe Fords, in killing Jesse James, delivered
\nsociety from one of the most hardened and
\nvillainous criminals of the age, hut they had
\nthemselves associated with James and had been
\nconcerned in many of his offenses. It is probably
\nthat they are lacking only in the courage and
\nbrains, but not in the depravity, which made
\nJesse a leader of his gang. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately for the region where they flourished
\nthere are many men with characters, dispositions
\nand tastes similar to theirs. Fire-arms and dirks
\nare openly worn and many are ready to draw and
\nfire at sight when an enemy comes in view. <\/p>\n

The killing of one or both of the Ford brothers may
\nbe announced any day. They clearly understand that
\nsociety can not be depended upon to protect them
\neither by its officers or penalties from violent
\ndeath at the hands of the avengers of Jesse James. <\/p>\n

Thus it will ever be until a decent public sentiment
\nshall be created in the south and southwest and
\nrender punishment of lawlessness certain and speedy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
