\nof the 15th inst., one of the worst storms
\nthat ever visited our county set in. It wrought
\nmore devastation and ruin than the county can
\nrecover from in months. The rain came down
\nsteadily from Sunday to Tuesday evening,
\nwhen it commenced a downpour of water,
\nas if trying to satisfy the many prayers
\noffered up by the farmers throughout the
\nState during the past dry season.
\nSan Luis Obispo Creek, which runs through
\nthe centre of this city, flowed its banks,
\ncarrying away five of the six bridges spanning
\nit, and segregating one portion of the town
\nfrom the other. The Chorro-street , bridge
\nbeing iron and entirely new, will entail a
\nheavy loss on the city. Spinny’s restaurant
\nand saloon, built over the creek, was washed
\naway, the occupants barely escaping.
\nAt 2 a. m. a general alarm was sounded, and every
\none able turned out to aid the distressed and save
\nproperty. One of the upper bridges, in coming down
\nstream, struck Lineheimer Bros.’ warehouse, demolishing
\nit, allowing the floor to sink and the goods to
\nslide into the water. Continuing down stream,
\nthe bridge collided with Mr. Hazen’s residence,
\nturning it completely around, and then landed in
\nhis orchard, where it now lies. Mr. Hazen also
\nloses an acre of orchard land. Postmaster Simmerler’s
\nresidence was washed away, and many other structures
\nalong the bank of the creek took a sail ocean ward.
\nThere were over twenty families driven from their
\nhomes by the rush of waters, and the streets
\nwere turned into miniature rivers. The suffering
\nfamilies were cared for as fast as room could
\nbe made by their luckier friends and
\neverything possible done for their comfort.
\nThe gas mains crossing the creek were broken,
\nand Wednesday, the 18th instant, the town was
\nin darkness. At present writing there is fear of
\na water famine, the reservoir and mains being
\nbadly wrecked and the water supply cut off. The
\nonly stages running are those on the Soledad line,
\nand they are very irregular, the rivers being too
\nhigh for fording and county bridges mostly gone.
\nThe Pacific Coast Railway Company will be the
\nheaviest losers, all their principal bridges
\nand trestle are wrecked or washed away,
\nand over three miles of roadbed between
\nSan Luis Obispo and Port Harford is entirely
\nobliterated, and in one place the track was
\ncarried 500 yards and turned completely over.
\nIt will be a month before a train can be run over it.
\nTo give some idea of the rainfall 10.04 inches
\nfell from 5 P. M. Tuesday to 6 A. M. Wednesday.
\nSix hundred feet of Pismo wharf was carried away,
\nand it is reported Cayucos wharf is badly damaged.
\nThe liverymen have reaped a harvest in supplying
\nguides and transferring passengers from San Luis
\nObispo to Port Harford, the only outlet, and
\nonly the hardiest attempt that, as the trip has
\nto be made horseback, and even that way it
\nis almost impassable on account of high rivers
\nand quicksands. Two horses have already been drowned,
\ntheir riders barely escaping with their lives.
\nThe steamship agent at Port Harford reports the
\nbay full of wreckage, and the Portuguese fishermen
\nare rescuing every imaginable sort of truck,
\nfrom a haystack to a bedstead.
\nYour reporter ascertained the following losses,
\nwhich are only a few of the many : Spinny, $800;
\nLineheimer Bros., $1,000; “The Andrews,” $800 ;
\nE. B. Morris, horse, $400 ; Dugai, store and
\nstock, not known ; R. T. Spurgeon, $350 ; E. Graves,
\nhorse, $200 ; Nevada Market, $500.
\nThe loss to the city will reach $20,000, while
\nthe railroad company’s loss will go over $100,000.
\nThe loss to families cannot be ascertained at
\npresent, but will fall heavily on them,
\nas they were mostly in moderate
\ncircumstances and some lost their all.
\nA rumor was afloat Friday that Superintendent
\nFilmore had sent to San Francisco for 500 Chinamen
\nto work at $1 10 per day on railroad repairs.
\nOn the strength of this report a mass-meeting
\nwas called, for Saturday evening at the
\nCity Hall, to protest against their being landed.
\nJudge Turner being called upon to address
\nthe meeting stated that Mr. Filmore
\nhad authorized him to say that he had not
\nsent for a single Celestial ; wanted
\nwhite labor if he could get it, and
\nwould pay $1 75 and $2 a day wages.
\nAfter this statement the meeting, without
\nfurther action, adjourned, and on Monday
\nmorning as many white men as could be got
\nwere put to work.
\nIt was particularly noticed that those <\/span>
\n\u00a0who were loudest in their cries against <\/span>
\n\u00a0the P. C. R. R. Co. were conspicuous by <\/span>
\n\u00a0their absence when the work was offered them. <\/span>
\nThe indications are that the storm is not yet
\nover. I do not know when this will reach
