\t\t\t\tSANTIAGO, Chile, July 5.\u2014 Wilhelm
\nBeckert, former chancellor of the
\nGerman legation, was shot here today
\nfor the\u00a0 murder of a Chilean messen-
\nger of the legation on February 5,
\n1909.
\nBeckert embezzled funds of the lega-
\ntion and attempted to cover up his
\ncrime by making it appear that he had
\nbeen burned\u00a0 to death.\u00a0 He murdered
\nthe messenger and left the body in the
\nlegation building to which he\u00a0 set fire,
\nat the same time disappearing him-
\nself. The fire did little damage.. He
\nwas captured before he could leave
\nthe country,\u00a0 and examination of the
\nbody disclosed its identity.
\nThe German government waived
\nBeckert’s diplomatic privileges and left
\nthe case to the Chilean courts.<\/p>\n
