Dennett, Widely Read and Fiercely Debated Philosopher, 82, Dies<\/a><br \/>\nEspousing his ideas in best sellers, he insisted that religion was an illusion, free will was a fantasy and evolution could only be explained by natural selection.<\/p>\n<p>From the New York Time obituary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAll varieties of perception \u2014 indeed all varieties of thought or mental activity \u2014 are accomplished in the brain by parallel, multitrack processes of interpretation and elaboration of sensory inputs,\u201d he wrote. \u201cInformation entering the nervous system is under continuous \u2018editorial revision.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the 1990s, Mr. Dennett had increasingly sought to explain the development of the brain \u2014 and illusions of a separate consciousness and free will \u2014 in terms of the evolution of human beings from other animal life.<\/p>\n<p>He believed that natural selection was the overwhelming factor in this evolution.
