Negro Plot Suppressed.<\/p>\n
New York, August 5th, 1865
\nThe Post’s Washington special says : The National
\nIntelligencer has a statement that a plot was discov-
\nered among a large number of negro workmen at Aquia
\nCreek to assassinate the white laborers on the railroad
\nthere. A company of soldiers arrested and imprisoned
\nall the negroes and captured their weapons.<\/p>\n

The Richmond correspondent of the N.Y. Tribune says:
\n“The true version of the affair at Aquia
\nCreek, and its results, are substantially as
\nfollows: On the afternoon of the 1st inst., an
\naltercation occurred between a white and
\nblack laborer, during which the white
\nthreatened to beat out the brains of the
\nblack, seizing a crow-bar at the same mom-
\nent. The black at once put himself on the
\ndefensive, and by threatening language cow-
\nered the white, who returned to his gang and
\nresumed his labor. The same evening, the whites
\nall joined together and proceeded to
\nthe negro quarters and by intimidating him
\nby threats of shooting if he attempted to es-
\ncape or offer resistance, stripped him of his
\nclothing, formed a circle, and the man with
\nwhom he had had the misunderstanding dur-
\ning the day was permitted to beat the negro
\nwith a bundle of switches firmly tied together
\nuntil the man ceased his torturing ef-
\nforts from pure exhaustion. The same night
\nthe negroes joined together, and arming
\nthemselves with clubs and spades, marched
\nin a body toward the camp of the white la-
\nborers, with the avowed intention of aveng-
\ning the injuries and insults offered their com-
\nrade and fellow-laborer. The whites, seeing
\ntheir approach, fled incontinently, and on
\narriving at a village in the neighborhood
\ncalled Game Point, circulated the wildest
\nrumors about a negro rising. The negroes,
\nobserving the flight of the whites, returned
\nto their quarters and their beds, from which
\nthere were aroused about daylight on the fol-
\nlowing morning by the presence and noisy
\ndemonstrations of the whites, who had pro-
\ncurred the assistance of a company
\nof the fifth Maryland Volunteers from
\nStafford Court House, led on by Lieut. E.C.
\nLefeber, who immediately began to
\nbreak the doors and windows, and to drag
\nthe negroes from their beds. The negroes,
\nfrightened, leaped from the windows, and
\nwere shot down as they made their appear-
\nance. One was killed outright, and several
\nseverely wounded. The whites were all armed
\nwith shotguns. Gen. T. M. Harris,
\ncommanding Department of Southeast Virginia,
\nhas the matter under investigation,
\nthe white laborers, about forty in number,
\nall discharged Confederate soldiers, have been
\narrested, tried and sentenced to service in
\nthe chain gang of Fredericksburg for sixty
\ndays. The Superintendent of the gangs on
\nthe railroad, E.H. Thompson, has been sen-
\ntenced to six months imprisonment for en-
\ncouraging the whites in these unlawful pro-
\nceedings. The Lieutenant is to be court-
\nmartialed, and the negroes have been sent
\nback to their work, confident of protection
\nof their rights, and encouragement in their
