D. Walsh, while riding with his wife at Oakland, was thrown from the buggy and his neck broken &#8230;. P. Breen was drowned in Pajaro river.<br \/>\n3d \u2014 A party of fourteen ladies and gentlemen were poisoned at San Gregorio by eating mussels. Captain Wm. Hanaford, an 1849 pioneer, died from the effects.<br \/>\n4th \u2014 Independence Day was duly celebrated in all parts of the State. The usual number of accidents occurred&#8230;. James Edwards shot and killed Mat Regan at Visalia \u2014 Edward Myers was shot and killed in San Francisco. George E. Conner is charged with the crime.<br \/>\n7th \u2014 Wm. Guy was shot, killed and robbed by one Arcea near Gilroy.<br \/>\n8th \u2014 N. E. Lane suicided at Michigan Bluff by cutting his throat .<br \/>\n9th \u2014 Giant Powder Works, near San Francisco, exploded. John Hany, the Assistant Superintendent of the works, was killed and two Chinese workmen badly injured.<br \/>\n10th \u2014 J. H. VanStrtaten fell in the Bay and was drowned at Oakland &#8230; Miss Leltie Berton was burned to death at Marysville.<br \/>\n11th \u2014 Telegraph lines between Los Angeles and Anaheim completed and first message sent.<br \/>\n12th \u2014 Three Chinamen were arrested for forging notes on the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. The lithographs, copperplates, tools, etc., and \u00a335,000 in \u00a31 notes were captured &#8230; The Grand Jury of Los Angeles made a partial report, including 16 indictments for murder.<br \/>\n15th \u2014 News of the declaration of war by France against Prussia received. The declaration of war was announced to the French Corps Legislatif at fifty minutes to 1 p. m., July 15th.<br \/>\n17th \u2014 Earthquake at Fort Tejon&#8230;. Patrick H.Grimes, James Clark and B. Bazzaline were drowned in San Antonio Creek by the upsetting of a new boat invented by the latter.<br \/>\n19th \u2014 Magalia, alias Dogtown, burned ; loss, $20,000; insurance $13,000 in the Occidental Insurance Company &#8230; Large German meeting held in San Francisco to aid Fatherland.<br \/>\n20th \u2014 A boy named Walker, was thrown from his horse and killed at Stockton.<br \/>\n21st \u2014 John Nolan, crossing a bridge over Mormon Slough, slipped and fell, striking a cross brace and dropped in the water dead&#8230;. W. G. Hutchinson, engineer of the California and Oregon Railroad, was drowned while running across the Sacramento, near the mouth of Pitt river.<br \/>\n22d \u2014 Father A. C. Eiden, of St. Mary&#8217;s Hospital, had his leg broken by being thrown from his buggy in San Francisco. . . A. M. Dibble had his leg badly broken and torn, near Chico, by being caught in the horse-power of a thrashing machine.<br \/>\n23d \u2014 A full barn belonging to Noah Burroughs and a stack of grain, property of Wm. Gray, were burned at Waterloo; loss, $4,000.<br \/>\n24th \u2014 The residence of A. H. Jordan in San Mateo was destroyed by fire ; loss $18,000.<br \/>\n25th \u2014 The barn, outbuildings, two horses and twenty tons of hay, property Of David Austin, Sutter county, was burned ; loss, $10,000. 26th\u2014 Frank Baker, aged fifteen, fell from a cherry tree, at Los Angeles, and broke his neck.<br \/>\n27th \u2014 Oilman&#8217;s dry goods store was burned in Grass Valley; loss, $15,000.<br \/>\n30th \u2014 John Tyler shot and killed a well-known gambler, named James Dobson, on Montgomery street, San Francisco.<br \/>\n31st \u2014 George Francis Train was hit with a rotten egg while lecturing in San Francisco. <\/p>\n<p><strong>AUGUST<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>1st \u2014 The San Francisco printers struck for higher wages.<br \/>\n2d \u2014 Anna Getchel was burned to death in Nevada City at a fire which also destroyed $2,500 worth of property.<br \/>\n3d \u2014 W. C. Rice, former President of the California Pacific Railroad, died in San Francisco.<br \/>\n4th \u2014 Earthquake shock at Santa Cruz.<br \/>\n5th \u2014 Charles Quinn, who so brutally, outraged and murdered little Maggie Ryan, was found guilty of murder in the second degree by a San Francisco jury.<br \/>\n8th \u2014 Wells, Fargo &#038; . Co.&#8217;s express stage, near Volcano, was robbed of $5,100.<br \/>\n9th \u2014 Jack Stratman was found guilty, in San Francisco, of libel on J. C. Duncan. 10th \u2014 Mrs. Abraham Eiken nearly cut her bead off with a razor at Stockton . . . Republican State Central Committee adopted resolutions of sympathy with Germany.<br \/>\n11th \u2014The Mint was damaged $6,000 by fire&#8230;. H. F. Hitt hit Charles Chapmen with a load of duck shot near Los Angeles for seducing his wife.<br \/>\n12th \u2014 John Chapman, while eating his breakfast near Georgetown, was shot dead&#8230;. San Francisco Typographical Union pronounced the printers&#8217; strike a failure.<br \/>\n13th \u2014 Jack Stratman sentenced by judge Lake to six months in the county jail for libel on J. C. Duncan.<br \/>\n15th \u2014 The boot and shoe factory of J. Frank &#038; Co., in San Mateo county, destroyed by fire. Insured for $30,000. One hundred Chinamen had been employed in the factory &#8230; Flags in San Francisco were at halfmast in honor of Admiral Farragut, who died yesterday at Portsmouth, N. H. &#8230; The town at the New Almaden mines destroyed by fire.<br \/>\n16th\u2014A fire at Knight&#8217;s Ferry destroyed over $20,000 worth of the business portion of the town.<br \/>\n20th \u2014 Telegraph line completed to San Diego.<br \/>\n24th \u2014 Mr. Jacks, of Monterey, run his leg through a stationary washbasin at the Russ House, San Francisco, severely injuring himself.<br \/>\n25th \u2014 F. W. Horn, a German, suicided in San Francisco by smothering himself with a handkerchief &#8230; Annie Mooney, 13 years of age, died at Brooklyn from the combined effects of drugs and a brutal outrage.<br \/>\n29th \u2014 George, Katie and Lewis Walthers aged respectively 5\u00bd, 7 and 9 years, were playing in their father&#8217;s granary, ten miles from Yuba City, when a pile of wheat fell on them, killing George and injuring the others severely.<br \/>\n30th \u2014 A fire at Auburn destroyed the railroad depot, freight shed and Smith&#8217;s Hotel &#8230; Fifteen freight cars were thrown from the &#8216;trestle&#8217; work beyond Feather River bridge, on the California and Oregon Railroad, a distance of twenty feet and smashed up completely . . .
